The city of Lakes – Bhopal and the capital of Madhya Pradesh was founded by Raja Bhoj, an elegant statue of whom can be seen at Upper Lake, VIP Road. Despite industrialization, the city has the old charm of narrow alleys and crammed markets that co-exist harmoniously with high-tech malls and new planned city. The city has various Parks, Museums, Art Galleries, movie theaters, multi-cuisine restaurants, international food chains and yes Lakes!
Though the city was founded by Paramara King Bhoj (1000-1055) and was initially named Bhojpal, it has a mixed culture of both Hindus and Muslims and both the communities have been living at peace since ages. It was the rule of Begums in the 19th century that gave Bhopal a foundation of its Golden Age. They invested in public works and took care of their subjects. Buildings like the Jama Masjid and the Gohar Mahal are of those times. They gave the city a considerable mark in architecture, arts, music, poetry, and craft.
